Walvis Bay Self Driving Travel Information

Walvis Bay is Namibia’s main port town, built around a lagoon so rich in birdlife it draws tens of thousands of flamingos and other wading birds each year – a genuinely spectacular sight, just a short drive south of Swakopmund. This is the spot to add a lagoon boat trip or dolphin cruise to your self-drive itinerary, with dramatic dune scenery unfolding along the coast nearby.

Walvis Bay sits around 30 minutes south of Swakopmund on tar road, or roughly four and a half hours from Windhoek – an easy addition to a coastal leg of your trip.

There’s no malaria risk on this stretch of coast. The town has reasonable medical facilities, with more complete hospital care available a short drive away in Swakopmund or Windhoek if you need it.

Binoculars are a must for taking in the flamingo lagoon up close, and a warm layer will serve you well against the coastal fog and wind.
