Ponta do Ouro Self Driving Travel Information

Ponta do Ouro is a laid-back beach town just north of the South African border, loved for its diving, dolphin encounters, and long stretch of dune-backed coastline. It’s the perfect self-driving destination if you’re after an easy first taste of Mozambique’s beaches, without committing to a long drive north.

From the Kosi Bay border post in South Africa, it’s about 30 to 40 minutes on a sandy track to reach Ponta do Ouro. You’ll want a 4×4 with reasonable ground clearance for that final stretch – part of the adventure, really.

You’ll need a visa, a passport valid for six months beyond your entry date, and a temporary import permit for your vehicle, all sorted at the border.

Ponta do Ouro falls within Mozambique’s malaria zone, so prophylaxis is recommended – worth discussing with your doctor ahead of time. Medical facilities here are basic, and serious cases are evacuated to South Africa, so it’s worth keeping that in mind as you plan.
