Maputo Self Driving Travel Information

Maputo is Mozambique’s lively capital, where Portuguese colonial architecture meets buzzing seafood markets and palm-lined avenues along the shore of Maputo Bay. It’s an easy, atmospheric first or last stop on a self-driving holiday, with the beach towns further north beckoning along the coast road.

From Johannesburg, expect around five to six hours on the road via the Lebombo/Ressano Garcia border post. It’s mostly tar, including a toll route through Mpumalanga, so settle in and enjoy the journey.

Most nationalities will need a visa – some can get this on arrival at the border, though it’s best arranged in advance where possible. You’ll also need a passport valid for six months beyond your entry date and a temporary import permit for your vehicle.

Maputo sits within Mozambique’s malaria zone, with higher risk during the warmer months. It’s worth chatting to your doctor well before departure to discuss prophylaxis and make sure you’re properly prepared for the trip.
