Maseru Self Driving Travel Information

Maseru is Lesotho’s capital and largest town, tucked right on the Caledon River along the South African border. Craft markets dot the city, and the Basotho Hat cultural village sits just nearby, ready for a curious wander. It’s a great place to break up a self-driving trip – an easy first or last night in Lesotho before you tackle the mountains beyond.

Maseru is an easy tar-road drive from Bloemfontein or Ladybrand, just around 20 minutes from the Ladybrand border post – the simplest and most direct way into Lesotho.

Bring your passport valid for at least six months beyond your entry date, along with your vehicle’s registration papers, and you’re set to cross at the border post.

No malaria risk here, which is one less thing to worry about. Maseru also has decent medical facilities for the region, including a private hospital, so you’re in good hands if you need them.

The Lesotho loti is pegged to the South African Rand and the two are used interchangeably, so no need to worry about exchanging cash. Fuel stations are easy to find around Maseru too – worth a top-up here before heading into the more remote highland areas ahead.
