Few drives reward you like Sani Pass. This legendary gravel route climbs over 1,300 metres from the Drakensberg foothills near Underberg, South Africa, up to Lesotho’s high plateau – and finishes at the highest pub in Africa (yes, that’s a real thing, and yes, you’ve earned it). Self-driving Sani Pass means switchback views back over KwaZulu-Natal, a genuine sense of adventure behind the wheel, and a warm welcome into the traditional Basotho villages of the highlands beyond. It’s one of Southern Africa’s great road trips – just come prepared.
The South African side runs on tar all the way to the border post – easy driving. From there, the pass itself turns to steep, rutted gravel that demands a proper low-range 4×4. Leave the 2x4s and caravans at home – this road doesn’t compromise, and neither should your vehicle choice.
Pack your passport (valid for at least six months from your entry date) for both the South African and Lesotho border posts. You’ll also need your vehicle’s registration papers, and if the car isn’t registered in your name, a letter of authority to avoid any hold-ups.
Good news: there’s no malaria risk up in Lesotho’s highlands. Do pack for the cold, though – altitude means icy conditions are possible even in midsummer. The nearest full medical facilities are back down in Underberg or Pietermaritzburg, so it’s worth planning accordingly, especially if you’re travelling with family.
Winter snow (June to August) can close the pass without much notice. Always check current conditions with the border post or a local tour operator before you set off – a quick call can save you a wasted trip.
Warm layers, whatever the season – the highlands don’t follow the same rules as the coast. Don’t forget cash: both for the border post and that famous pub at the top.
