Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders,” Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and Zimbabwe’s biggest showstopper. Self-driving here means you arrive on your own schedule, then pack your days with bungee jumping, white-water rafting, and sunset cruises on the Zambezi – all just a short drive from the falls themselves.
Victoria Falls is reached via tar road, either straight through Zimbabwe or via Kasane in Botswana and across the border at Kazungula. Roads on the approach are in good shape the whole way.
Alongside Zimbabwe’s standard entry requirements, most visitors can grab a 90-day holiday visa on arrival. Bringing a rental vehicle across the border? You’ll need a temporary import permit, best arranged in advance with your rental provider.
Victoria Falls sits within Zimbabwe’s malaria zone, so prophylaxis is recommended. Medical facilities in town are decent for a tourist hub, but anything serious gets evacuated to Bulawayo or South Africa.
Falls entry, bungee jumping, and rafting are best booked ahead – especially during the June to August peak season, when the falls are at their most spectacular.
