The Garden Route is South Africa’s classic coastal drive, winding from Mossel Bay to Storms River through lush forests, tranquil lagoons, and long stretches of white beach. It’s one of the easiest self-driving holidays in the country – good tar road throughout, with towns conveniently spaced for easy overnight stops along the way.
The Garden Route follows the N2 highway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, entirely on tar road. Driven without stops, the full stretch takes around six to seven hours – though honestly, this is a route made for stopping often.
There’s no malaria risk anywhere along the Garden Route, and towns like Knysna, George, and Plettenberg Bay all offer good medical facilities, so you can explore with confidence.
The Garden Route is a pleasure year-round, though December to January marks peak holiday season, when roads and towns get considerably busier. If you’re after a quieter drive, consider timing your trip outside these months.
