The Drakensberg is South Africa’s highest mountain range – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jagged peaks, ancient San rock art, and hiking trails stretching along the KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho border. It’s a self-driving destination made for adventure, with hiking, trout fishing, and jaw-dropping mountain scenery all within easy reach of Durban or Johannesburg.
From Durban, it’s around a three-hour drive to the central Drakensberg (Champagne Valley area), entirely on tar road – a scenic and stress-free run into the mountains.
Good news: there’s no malaria risk in the Drakensberg. Medical facilities are limited within the mountains themselves, so it’s worth knowing that the nearest towns with proper care are Winterton or Bergville.
Most resort areas are easily reached on good tar road, though a few passes into the high Berg call for a 4×4 and can close seasonally – well worth checking ahead so your adventure goes off without a hitch.
